Horse Sense: the Beginning
I am not sure what stirs in a young soul to pursue something as noble as working with horses, but I am sure it takes a mentor with incredible patience and a gift of animal understanding, both to train and to have the connection with the animal that is beyond explanation. My mentor was my cousin Hazel, who could ride a horse as if she was indeed part of the animal with the discipline and finesse to persuade the animal to do what was required and to at the same time demonstrate the tough love that the horse respected and understood. She took me under her wing at a very young age and taught me the language of the horse.
Hazel was the encouragement that I needed, the coach who could turn a very tough lesson into an adventure and make the whole experience such fun. She taught safety above all and the respect for one of the most beautiful creatures the Lord has ever created, and the understanding that He created them for a wonderful purpose, one that we could participate in. Dearest Hazel how can I ever thank you for all your blood sweat and tears you put into me and the horses we rode and loved. The Lord sent you for many reasons, but I am thankful every day that He allowed me to be part of the dream. ~ Philip D. Elder
