Why Horse Training?There seems to be a significant transfer of knowledge in the training process, or at least there certainly should be. I have gone through significant training in quality, lean manufacturing, electrical engineering, manufacturing processes, color control in printing,…but I have never been as amazed as when I work with horses and see the “breakthrough”! It is breathtaking and so rewarding. I always say that the horses teach you more than you teach them sometimes. The relationship between the trainer and the horse is so unique, and so special it takes on its own life. To see a horse “get it” when you are training is parallel to teaching a child to read and the moment they get it, WOW!!! It is lessons full of, look, I want you to trust me, no not that, this, pressure, release, as the reward, it is reading an animal so noble, beautiful, responsive, and intelligent that it makes the hair on your neck stand straight up! I work with horses because I love them and respect them and am so excited to see them “get it”. It has been in my blood since I was 4 or 5. My Daddy put me on “Stubby”, a little Shetland pony when I was 4 and said, "Son, this is where you belong"… He was right. Horses help people to understand themselves, their fears, their weaknesses, but also their desires to improve, to understand and be sensitive to one another. We just have to listen, to be observant to watch what the Lord has created in a horse to benefit from this noble creature. ~ Phil Elder |
